The health and safety of those taking the CFP® exam are paramount to us. CFP Board continues to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and review the recommendations from national and state health organizations. Based upon the latest information, and given the forecasts for upcoming months, CFP Board postponed the July 2020 exam administration to September 22-29, 2020.

We've compiled the following information to assist candidates with questions about the September exam.

Please Note: To help accommodate candidates for the September CFP® exam, CFP Board will allow a remote testing option for those who are eligible based on location or health criteria. More details and instructions on how to apply are available on our Remote Proctoring FAQ page.

Frequently Asked Questions

The CFP® exam will now include midsection breaks. The exam will still be delivered in two overall sections of 85 questions to be completed in 180 minutes each. However, each section of the exam will be divided into two distinct subsections, and an optional unscheduled break may be taken between those subsections. Candidates can move back and forth within each subsection before proceeding. However, once the next subsection begins, candidates will not be allowed to access the previous subsections of the exam.

The distribution of item types will be balanced across subsections of the CFP® exam and candidates will need a comparable amount of time to answer the questions in each subsection. This will give candidates the opportunity to manage section time more effectively by providing a mid-point check. Candidates should plan to spend approximately 90 minutes on each subsection.

No. The new CARES Act 2020 will not be tested on the September 2020 exam.

Many candidates registered for the July 2020 exam have already dedicated significant time and energy preparing to be tested on the topics scheduled to be addressed in that exam. CFP Board determined it would be unfair to change the scope of preparation, given the unforeseen circumstances that led to the postponement of the July 2020 exam.

CFP Board is offering a remote test option for candidates who are eligible based on location or health criteria. This includes candidates in states where testing centers are not available or closed due to the pandemic, as well as those who need to travel more than 50 miles to get to a Prometric test center. It also includes candidates who have an eligible health reason. In order to participate in remote proctoring, candidates must meet minimum technology requirements.

CFP Board’s top priority is the welfare of our candidates, stakeholders, partners and staff. We will continue to monitor the situation and make the best decision for our upcoming exam administrations. CFP Board will only move forward with planned exam administrations if we believe they can be conducted without compromising the health of our exam candidates and their loved ones.

The tutorial below provides step by step instructions on how to schedule your testing appointment.
