October 01, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC, October 2, 2008 – Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) announced the formation of a Public Policy Council, which was established to support and enhance CFP Board’s advocacy efforts. CFP Board is the certifying and standards-setting organization that oversees more than 58,000 professionals holding CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in the United States.

The Council will act in an advisory role, identifying and prioritizing significant public policy issues that are aligned with CFP Board’s mission to benefit the public. “In order to fulfill our mission, we have an obligation to ensure that those involved in crafting and debating public policy understand the public benefits of CFP® certification,” said Kevin R. Keller, CEO of CFP Board.

The Council includes CFP® certificants and public members who are recognized for their substantive knowledge in a number of key subject areas, including public affairs, legislation, regulation, taxation, employee pension and health benefits and consumer advocacy. The council members are:

Brian T. Borders, Founder & Principal, Borders Law Group;

Mercer E. Bullard, University of Mississippi Law School, Founder & CEO, Fund Democracy;

James K. Conzelman, Senior Vice President, Stanford Financial Group;

Nancy Johnson Jones, CFP®, HighTower Advisors;

“We are pleased with the broad range of experience and expertise of the individuals who have agreed to serve on our first Public Policy Council,” said David G. Strege, CFP®, Chair of CFP Board’s Board of Directors. “Given the unprecedented upheaval in financial institutions and the renewed calls for more oversight, regulation and protection of the public in the delivery of financial services, this is an important time for CFP Board to have expert counsel on policy issues.”

The Council will hold its first meeting in December and will work closely with CFP Board’s Managing Director of Public Policy, Marilyn Mohrman-Gillis.
