CFP Board Announces Chair Appointments to Disciplinary and Ethics Commission, Advisory Councils

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) announced today the appointments of its 2014 Chairs to the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission, Council on Education, Council on Examinations and Public Policy Council.

“Each of these individuals will play a critical role in ensuring we are fulfilling our mission of benefiting the public with CFP® professionals who are held to rigorous ethics, education and examination standards,” said CFP Board CEO Kevin Keller, CAE. “I am confident that their expertise, leadership and passion for the profession will prove invaluable to CFP Board and its stakeholders this year.”

Matthew Murphy, CFP® - Chair, Disciplinary and Ethics Commission

The Disciplinary and Ethics Commission is responsible for interpreting and applying the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Rules of Conduct and Financial Planning Practice Standards to allegations of rule violations involving CFP® professionals and imposing, where necessary, appropriate discipline.

Murphy is the founder and president of Murphy Capital Advisors, an independent financial planning and investment advisory firm headquartered in Goodyear, Arizona.

Murphy’s 20-year career includes experience as a regulator in the commodities/futures industry, and work in asset management for a large institutional asset manager located in Chicago.  

After serving as a volunteer hearing panelist in 2009, Murphy was appointed to the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission where he has served as a member since 2010 and is the 2014 chair.  He is an active member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA).  In addition, Murphy has previously served as a board member of the Phoenix Chapter of the Financial Planning Association.

Murphy received his Bachelor’s degree in finance with honors from Illinois State University. He is a NAPFA-Registered Advisor and obtained his CFP® certification in 2003.

John Grable, Ph.D., CFP® - Chair, Council on Education

The Council on Education was established in 2008 to advise CFP Board staff on the development and clarification of all educational policies related to the CFP® certification process. The Council provides input on policies that relate to education requirements, CFP Board-Registered Programs and Continuing Education.

Grable is a professor at the University of Georgia, where he holds an Athletic Association Endowed Professorship. In this role, he teaches and conducts research at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Grable was the founding editor for the Journal of Personal Finance and he is currently the co-editor of the Journal of Financial Therapy. His research interests include financial risk-tolerance assessment, financial planning help-seeking behavior and financial therapy/counseling.

Grable has served on the Board of Directors of the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC), as Treasurer and President for the American Council on Consumer Interests (ACCI) and as Treasurer for the Financial Therapy Association. He also served on the Research Advisory Council of the Take Charge America Institute (TCAI) for Consumer Education and Research at the University of Arizona.
